HST Petition a Success, but Ignored
Chief Electoral Officer Craig James said that the Fight HST Initiative to end the Harmonized Sales Tax in BC successfully passed the required 10% threshold in all 85 ridings – in fact in many ridings over 15% was reached. An except from a FightHST.com press release:
“…late today Craig James privately told Vander Zalm that Elections BC will not submit the successful petition to the Standing Committee until a final decision has been reached by the courts regarding a lawsuit by a big business coalition attempting to quash the petition.”
Needless to say the anti-HST movement was outraged. Vander Zalm’s response was:
“Craig James’ refusal to submit the successful petition Bill to the Standing Committee means that he has effectively destroyed the democratic process. James is opening the door for any group opposed to a Citizen Initiative in future to thwart the democratic will of the people simply by launching a challenge to that petition in court.”
Vander Zalm continued with:
“This is the worst kind of political meddling I have ever seen in all my political days. It challenges the credibility of the Chief Electoral Officer, and that of the entire organization of Elections BC. It must be stopped. This only strengthens our resolve to restore democracy in BC. And that starts with overturning the government starting on November 15.”

I can’t believe that the Elections Officer woill not submit the results untill some large corporation (or probably any one else) presents their opposition the petition.
Let this go to plebisite and then everyone can have a say. Neil Butler
hi my name is matthew basso and i really dont like the hst i hope the hst will be gone soon
Once again the interests of large corporations are given more weight than the interests of the populace. At least a former right-wing Socred is working on defeating something that was engineered by Ottawa Conservatives.
This Liberal government run by the most arrogant politicians that B.C. has ever seen is racing towards the judgment of the people of British Columbia. Their arrogance is so outrageous and their mismanagement of B.C.’s finances is so egregious that it’s clear they abandoned any integrity or moral compass long ago. The sad thing for B.C. however, is that a third party has not yet risen up. As we all know from previous experience, the NDP are NOT the answer and they serve only to kill all business in this Province. B.C. should still rue the day that they allowed the Social Credit Party to fail. Under the Socreds, our business, and many others, along with the Province as a whole, was the most prosperous of the 10 provinces. B.C. can now regretfully take it’s place tied with the bottom. What a disgraceful turn of fortunes for this beautiful Province.
Vanderzalm is an idiot and the man only cares about himself not you the consumer. Why not educate yourselves about the tax before falling for the crap that comes out of his mouth. Maybe he could give you all a shovel so you all can go out and dig a ditch. I am sure his wife still wears her little golf shovel around her neck that he gave out at a party many moons ago before he was premier. Oh, wasn’t he forced to step down over a scandal involving his little village? The man is millionare and only his interests not yours at heart. Your fooish to think he cares. He probably laughs and brags about how it is so easy to brainwash some people of BC. Leading lambs to the slaughter. Ask about the gold shovel and the signifigance over it. I don’t think you would believe a word that comes out of his mouth after that. Maybe I should pull out my little gold shovel that he gave @ a party and provide that information to the news media. Now that would be priceless!
The HST is a fair tax, especially with a rebate given to the lower income,I am a retired person ,living on a limited income.
Money to pay for escalating health costs, the construction I see happening for new hospitals, Senior care centers, and new roads being constructed and upgraded, etc.requires money,we have a low income tax in B.C.,let’s keep it that way , I for one willingly pay the HST.
I agree it was a surprise, but possibly time was of the essence!.
It seems strange that, a former premier of a right wing party Van Der Zamm, would co-operate with the N.D.P. to battle this Tax.
Is there an ulterior motive?

That’s just it people! There IS no alternative. There is nobody who follows the constitution. You know why? Constitutionalists are under the extremists list of homeland security which Canada is under thanks to our crooked government.
The key here is to go to your polling station, register and then refuse your ballot. You abstain in disgust of the lack of candidates that represent the people.
Remember you may like your ridings candidate but voting for them still puts people like Stephen Harper in office.
You must abstain your vote!!
p.s. NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!
The HST has performed political miracles. Where the heck is the carbon tax money??WE are completely completely ignoring the revenue generated by the ” carbon tax” is aboluitely astounding we are missing this…Fiscal mis management can only be continued by having public officials paid off in one way or another. BC Rail another example, just plead guilly guys! ( with no reward?)
If the Liberals ( Socreds) disgust us so much( and they quite rightly do)…KICK THEM OUT ( then replace some unnamed election officers and some others who are for sale and continually flaunt the democratic process)
Watch that particular man closely for taking an extra holiday or in the near future?
What a crock!!!
