A number of home based services will be affected by Harmonized Sales Tax in Ontario, but many costs remain unaffected. Here’s how it’s broken down.
Unaffected items (currently charged 5% GST and 8% PST):
- Cable television services
- Mobile phones services
- Home phone services
- Home appliance repair services (stoves, refrigerators, etc)
Items that will jump from 5% GST to 13% HST:
- Electricity and heating services
- Internet access services
- Electrician, Plumbing and Carpentry services
- Landscaping, lawn care and private snow removal services

bc is the province with the highest tax rate in the country and canada is one of the highest taxed. countries in the world. we all know we have the best country and living conditions in the world but the people that run this country must realize that there is a limit that people will put up with when it comes to taxes. also because of taxes we have one of the highest cost of living in canada, gas tax, carbon tax etc, etc, etc. if you can’t afford to live in this privince in this wonderful country, what do you do.
I recieved my cable bill and they informed me that on july 1 my cable will be effected by the hst
most of the things you buy already have gst and pst . the hst wont hurt them like cable already has gst and pst so combine does not make your cable go up with the hst
Internet services in Ontario will be going up a little more. I don’t get why.
If the government really wanted to help the taxpayers, then they could have combined both taxes AND lowered it across the board from 13 to 10 percent, in an economic downturn, this is the equivalant to driving the patient to the hospital before shooting them. Now I have to get creative and find more ways to save money, a problem only made worse because I’m a homeowner. The only one that benefits from this is the government.

-CableTV & for most, Internet services, are WANTS.
-Food is a NEED, not a product to tax to cover up mis-appropriation of funds.
-Government economists & suck-ups,laud the HST as a panacea, that will save consumers money because, “business people are then going to pass along their savings to the consumer.”
-As they do with the GST?
-HST will result in fewer taxes collected, because many people are going to insist on cash-only deals or barter.
TWO NEW REVENUE SOURCES
-BC MLA Salaries, presently untaxed
-Tax at a 46% Base Tax Rate
-their salaries have doubled in the past 10 years.
-MLA’s housing is subsidized(via re-imbursal)
-they only worked 5 months in 2009 & 2010.
-enjoyed the Olympics as elite guests
-travel to/from Victoria & Constituency should not be regarded as a perk
-tax perks at 40%+ and allow as a deduction
-are classed as taxable benefits in the Private Sector.
Not fair, you say?
What of the usual claim, “It”s not the money, it’s the honour of serving the people of British Columbia, that drew me to politics.”??
I despise this new HST because it’s now applied to gasoline, electricity, home heating and bakery items. It surprised me the other day when I paid for my son’s birthday cake. A HST tax on cake? It’s like they took 13% of his cake even before I got it home!
