Pedal Power against HST
Cycling enthusiasts of all ages amassed in a rally on March 3rd to support Lana Popham’s campaign which is attempting to convince the government to add bicycles, bicycle repairs and associated equipment to the BC HST exemption list. Lana’s party, the NDP, have taken a firm stand against HST in BC and continue to oppose the HST on a number of fronts. The additional 7% tax that will be added to bicycles and related services under the proposed Harmonized Sales Tax is an interesting debate to consider. At the rally Lana Popham said:
“The HST will exempt fuel, making the carbon tax ineffective – it’s another lost opportunity to fight climate change.”
A valid point, considering the carbon emission free mode of transportation known as cycling may become another victim of the HST this summer. Cyclists at the rally are confused about the lack of consideration the proposed HST has for this alternative mode of transportation. Noted as a green and healthy way to get around, cycling is just the type of activity that can keep people healthy. Promoting a healthy lifestyle is a great way to lower health costs, but taxing an activity like cycling just doesn’t sit right with a number of people. Bicycles and related expenses have been exempt from PST since 1981 thanks to Social Credit finance minister Hugh Curtis. Nearly 30 years later, many believe that BC’s Harmonized Sales Tax is a step backwards with regards to sustainable transportation, and it isn’t difficult to see their point!
