Jack Layton on HST

HSTincanada.com recently asked NDP leader Jack Layton his opinion of the harmonized sales tax and what his party is doing to fight it. The following is from our correspondence:
Thank you for contacting me about the harmonization of the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and provincial sales tax (PST). The federal New Democratic Party voted against the HST in Parliament. It was the Harper government who rammed the HST through Parliament with the full support of the Liberal and Bloc Québécois parities. We opposed this move from the very start. We agree that it will be Canadian consumers, including many seniors, who will bear the brunt of the HST. You can find out more about our campaign to stop the HST by checking this link:
As part of our opposition to this wrong-headed move, we have introduced motions to stop the implementation of the HST in BC and Ontario. For more information on the BC motion, please visit:
We also join with our BC NDP colleagues in fighting the HST. For more information on their campaigns, please visit:
The following links provide additional information about our fight to stop the HST:
Hope these links provide some concrete answers to your question, and provide references for you when you are speaking with people about their political alternatives.
All the best.
Sincerely,
Jack Layton, MP (Toronto-Danforth)
Leader, Canada’s New Democrats

Canada, is no longer a Democratic country. Harper, Iggy, Campbell and Hansen, each and every one of them have lied to their citizens about the HST. Canadians have to get accustomed to, broken promises and being lied to. BC, is a virtual, waste land. There have been so many massive lay offs. Campbell and Hansen, have sold some of our mills to China, those jobs will never be back. We, have a community, turning into a ghost town. One hospital was cut so badly, patients beds were in the shower room. 800 more teachers, will be laid off. 300, more mill workers, have recently been laid off. The HST, is going to cause a, high number of, families, to become homeless. We, are already seeing seniors homeless now. Food costs have risen 27%, seniors, are unable to pay their utility bills. The HST, for sure, will put, even more seniors on the street. Our community, is going underground, and will use the bartering system. All we will have to buy is, coffee, tea, flour, sugar, salt and pepper. Buy nothing made in China, if you do, you will be supporting child labor. I, prefer to do without, and improvise. Winter greenhouses, will be built, plant your back yard, into a vegetable garden. Apartment dwellers, can get together and rent a plot of ground, from a farmer. Dig a root cellar, or, make a cold room, vegetables such as, potato’s, carrots, onions, turnips, cabbage and onions, will keep all winter. Have your own chickens for meat and eggs. We, have a mobile unit that will, come to you to slaughter your chickens for you. Farmers, will sell eggs and chicken meat to you. Take advantage of the farmer markets. This is one way to, beat this unfair, HST, buy as little as possible.
Unfortunately, people in politics cant do simple math, and keep saying that no it will not cost us more.
Lets see, everything that I buy right now that is PST exempt (any services from legal to house cleaning to other contracts) will cost me 8% more due to HST. So how does paying more somehow mean the opposite????
This is just horrible…. I don’t want to rant so I wont. How ever I just want to say your welcome stephen harper, your welcome for this ridiculous populous giving the torys, Liberals, the pleasure of screwing every little man that makes your life so luxurious, try going to work everyday, raising a family on next to nothing and have some jerks like you just make life even more miserable every chance you get. Jack I wish you the best and one day these modern day economic nazi’s will fall. Just wish these politicians would stop screwing us, cant they realize that without the populous they would be nothing. Anyone who votes anything besides green or NDP i now consider a trader to the Canandian people. Oh crap I ranted a little
by the way, I suggest if you haven’t already considered this. Maybe you could get a motion going so CAS is not exempt from the freedom of information act, kinda makes them seem more like a child abducting for profit business dont it? just think it would be good for votes thats all.
How do we stop this HST. I have petitioned Dalton McGuinty’s Office and signed petitions as well. I was in NF when the maritimes went HST and Gas went up from $0.66 to $0.76 the first day and it never looked back.
I work at a Steel Plant where most are middle income earners and the whole plant is talking about how this is going to impact them in a contract year. Any raise we get this contract year will be gobbled up by the HST impact, and we have no leverage to negotiate good raises in this economy with the price of steel and raw materials where they are.
The local natives are going to put a toll on Highway 17 where it passes through their reserve to protest the impact the HST is going to have on them which is going to have a deeper impact on how much it costs for many of us to get to work, school, sporting events and in turn all will suffer.
We never like change, but I have seen this change before and it was not good. We have to stop this!
