Online Community Rallying in Opposition to HST

22 January 2010 One Comment

Technology is giving a new voice to dissent and alternative opinion. While the mass media is still controlled by major conglomerates, the web is quickly creating an outlet for people who want to hear different opinions and, more importantly, want to share their own views on popular topics. In Canada this is readily apparent in the ongoing debate of harmonized sales tax. Proposed in the summer of 2009, the added tax is supposed to take effect in Ontario and B.C. on July 1st, Canada’s Birthday.

Clearly many Canadians feel there will be little cause for celebration as polls show that popular opinion is decidedly against the new tax. But things are not all that bleak for those in opposition to the HST as an increasing number of websites are popping up in support of stopping the so called ‘hated sales tax’.

With Manitoba’s recent move to shelve implementing the tax, I think people across Ontario and British Columbia who are against HST should feel a bit of hope (and perhaps a even a little pride) in helping influence the decision. It is not too late to voice your opinions on this tax, with 5 months remaining before it is implemented, you can join the thousands of others online in their fight to be heard.

I have compiled a list of websites and added some popular videos geared toward spreading the word on HST.

We have found that since the introduction of the 13% HST, we have looked at all our purchases across the board. As senior citizens, we have found the cost of heating our home, gasoline and eating out more expensive, and have have cut back accordingly. We even have put off items- i.e. car, and travel to a degree. And paying extra HST on our coffee and donut (under $4.00) at our local Timmies !!. Our group is becoming fans of the tea party. We have been badly lead folks. No accountability. -e-
