Canadian Automobile Dealers Association in Support of HST

11 January 2010 One Comment

In a press conference on Friday, December 18th, CADA commended parliaments move to implement the new added tax in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia.

Michael Hatch, CADA’s Chief Economist, said, “dealers, like all other business owners, welcome changes which will enhance the business climate—and that is exactly what the HST and accompanying tax modifications will do.”

With the recession hitting Canadian businesses hard, particularly the auto industry in Ontario, it is nice to hear that CADA is rallying to meet the new and hopefully stronger year.

“we must do all we can to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of Canadian businesses, the engine of economic growth. Harmonizing provincial and federal sales taxes is a significant step in the right direction”

While a many businesses are in favor of the a harmonized sales tax, the provincial governments are having a much harder time selling the new tax to consumers.

Did I hear correctly that BC residence will not have to pay HST on private vehicle sales? Something about not having the means to collect it? In the other participating provinces Nova Scotia, New Brunswich and Newfoundland and Laborador, as well as documented to be imposed in Ontario when implimented (July 1, 2010) private sales of motor vehicles will be subject to HST, paybale at time of registration. What’s up with BC? There needs to be a level playing field on all vehicle sales dealer or private to boost the automotive economy!
